In Search of the Box Jellyfish

Gary and I went down to the south end of the Sunabe seawall Tuesday (18 July) after breakfast.  We were hoping to find the conditions right, for the box jellyfish to be hanging around in the shallows.  When we got there, a class of Japanese divers were all dressed and in their gear ready to get into the water, but sitting on the steps.  Their divemasters were trying to clear the way through the jellyfish.  Delighted, Gary and I quickly drove home and got our gear and came back.  Below is a few pitiful photos of our dive on Wednesday.  I took my Olympus 5050 with no strobe and no filter. Just figured "what the heck".  Next time I'll use a fixed focus so I can frame them better and have more useable shots.

After suffering through so much bad weather and poor diving conditions, this was great to see!

Gary couldn't wait to get in the water. Same for me, but I wanted a few pictures.

One nice things about being off on Tuesday and Wednesday...empty dive sites!

Okay, one more look at the grafitti. There's some good stuff in certain areas.

Okay. This box jellyfish is about 12 inches from one end to the other.

A terrible shot, but you can start to see it's inner structure.

Here's the scary part. See how transparent they are near the surface!

Okay, just messing around with the camera. Some Chinese Catfish.

A cute little moray eel that Gary spotted. He decided to let me take his picture.

A sad reminder of the trash that litters the ocean floor around the island.
